How to Boost Your SEO by Using Schema Markup?

What is Schema Markup?

Schema markup is HTML code—a form of microdata—that you add to your webpage. Once the HTML code is added, schema markup helps search engines like Google, Bing, and Yandex understand the content you’re providing so that they can provide the quickest, most relevant results for each searcher in their search engine results pages (SERPs).

Schema was created back in 2011 when the three search engines started collaborating to come up with hyper user-focused search result improvements that would be standard and understood across all marketing platforms.

What Types of Schema Markups Are There?

Organization Schema Markup

The organization schema markup clarifies your company introduction, including official logo, contact info, location, and social profiles. This helps give you the short and skinny of a company right off the bat without having to dig around to try and find basics. It also makes it easier for people to find the information they need to contact you right away.

Person Market Schema Markup

The Person Market Schema shows information about an individual, such as name, birthday, address, education, and family members.

Google assumes that if you’re searching for someone by name, you’re likely looking for some basic information.

So, with this schema, it’s aiming to deliver the answer you seek without you needing to click through to another website.

 Local Business Schema Markup

The Local Business Schema Markup is great for local companies or a local branch of an organization. It helps consumers find the company’s location and other information such as the address, opening hours, contact info, etc.

Product & Offer Schema Markup

The Product & Offer markups are used to sell a specific item of a service or digital product.

Both enable product information to be delivered, such as price and status, but the Offer markup also requires the price and price currency properties, while Product markup only requires the name property.

Breadcrumbs Markup

Breadcrumbs markup lists the path links that lead to the current digital page. It helps users to see their location and helps reduce bounce rates.

Article Schema Markup

Schema Article Markup is most commonly used for news and blog posts.

It makes it easier for search engines to understand the content pulling in the headline, time it was published, a featured image, and sometimes even a video. There are, however, different types of Article Schema Markup for the different type of articles, such as Blog Post, News Article, and Scholarly Article.

There are also many other types, but we are highlighting the most types used.

How to Use Schema Markup for SEO?

Go to Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper

Select the Type of Data

There are several options listed. This list is not exhaustive. For the sample below, I’m going to use “Articles” since it’s one of the most common types of content.

Paste the URL You Want to Markup

If you only have HTML, you can paste that instead. Then, click “Start Tagging.”

The page will load in the markup marketing tool and provide you with the workspace for the next phase of markup—tagging items. You’ll see your web page in the left pane, and the data items in the right pane.

How To Implement Schema Markup on Your Website

Select the Elements to Mark Up

Use the list of data items as a guide, and highlight the other items in your article to add them to the markup list. You probably won’t be able to tag every item in the list. Just add what you can.

Create the HTML

Once you’ve finished, click “Create HTML.”

Add Schema Markup to Your Site

Next, you will go into your CMS (or source code if you’re not using a CMS) and add the highlighted snippets in the appropriate spots. Find the yellow markers on the scrollbar to find the schema markup code.
