What Developers Should Know

skills

Web developers is a broad term for the work involved in developing a website for the Internet (World Wide Web) or an intranet (a private network).

What is web development? - Daniel HonradeWeb development can range from developing a simple single static page of plain text to complex web-based applications (web apps) or social networking services. A more comprehensive list of tasks to which web development commonly refers, may include web engineering, web design, web content development, client liaison, client-side/server-side scripting, web server and network security configuration, and e-commerce development. Among web professionals, ‘web development’ usually refers to the main non-design aspects of building web sites: writing markup and coding. Most recently Web development has come to mean the creation of content management systems or CMS. These CMS can be made from scratch, proprietary or open source. In broad terms the CMS acts as the middleware between the database and the user through the browser. A principle benefit of a CMS is that it allows non-technical people to make changes to their web site without having technical knowledge. In addition, for larger organizations and businesses, the need for a CMS is often a must have, and they will usually have in-house resources to develop and maintain the CMS, or the budget to outsource the development to an external agency.

The skills required for the different aspects of web development can be broadly divided into two categories:

– Technical skills: These are the skills related to the actual coding and mark-up of a website. Moreover, a web developer needs to be able to write code in a variety of languages (such as PHP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript), as well as have a good understanding of server-side technologies (such as Apache, MySQL and XML).

– Non-technical skills: These are the skills related to the more business-oriented side of web development. Thus, a web developer needs to be able to understand the needs of a client or employer, and be able to communicate these needs clearly. In addition, they need to be able to manage their time and resources effectively. Plus, and be good at problem-solving.
