Build Your Brand Using Twitter Communities

What are Twitter Communities?

Twitter Community is a pilot program by Twitter in which users can connect and engage with one another in private channels based on their interests. With Twitter Communities, members can Tweet messages that will only be visible to those in the Community.

Twitter Communities meant to close that gap and provide one place for users to meet with users with whom they share personal and professional interests.

There are three types of users in Twitter Communities:

  • Admins who own the Community and manage its members.
  • Moderators who ensure the Community is safe, facilitate conversation, and connect like-minded people.
  • Members who have been invited into the Community and now can engage with other members.

Who are Twitter communities for?

The purpose of Twitter communities is to enable anyone to create a group for people who share the same interests, hobbies, passions and goals. Twitter communities are also a way for users to communicate with just their community vs. sending a tweet to all of their digital followers.

There’s no specific type of genre or industry you have to be in to open a community.

Finding Twitter Communities

As it currently stands, you can only access Twitter communities if you are invited or if you are approved to be an admin to start your own.

In that case, the Communities tab will show up on your app or on the sidebar of the web app. As a non-member, you can view the Community page and timeline if it has been shared with you but you cannot interact with the digital Tweets or request to join.

Benefits of joining as a Brand

Twitter communities are the perfect opportunity to build a community of brand advocates. Use them to strengthen your brand’s visibility and potentially increase your sales. Try not to use Twitter communities to fixate on marketing and promotion, focus on topics that matter. Communities are a chance to position yourself as an influencer, leader and friend.

Humanizing your brand gains the trust of your community members. Like in the real world, this requires offering value, extending a helping hand and lending an ear. Conversations are two-ways, so refrain from using this as a platform to shout out deals 24-7.

Use Twitter communities to create VIP experiences for your customers and turn them into loyal fans and evangelists.

Deliver content that’s useful, timely and relevant so your members continue to follow and promote it to others they know.

Soon, your community will grow into a highly-targeted group that welcomes marketing content from your brand.

Tips to help you grow your Twitter Community:

Create tweets that add value

While tweeting regularly and consistently is important, it won’t make a big difference unless your tweets add value to your audience.

Curate and retweet

While it’s important to create valuable content to attract more followers, your tweets don’t have to be 100% original. That means you can curate content from other companies, publications, and influential personalities and share them with your followers. Similarly, you can even retweet directly from other Twitter accounts as long as the tweet is relevant and valuable to your audience..

Keep an eye on the competition

Your competitors could also hold the key to successful Twitter growth. So make sure you keep an eye on them to see what’s working for them and how you can replicate their strategies.

Make the most of visual content

Visual content rules on most social media platforms, and Twitter is no different. Images and videos have the advantage of being able to stand out among a wall of text. So it’s no surprise that the experts we talked to also recommended leveraging visuals in your marketing Twitter strategy.
